Ellison Lassell Crawford was born in Castine, Maine in 1833. He sailed to California in 1852. He first settled in San Francisco and worked in a hotel as a cook. He later mined and owned a store in Spanish Diggings and Spanish Bar in El Dorado County. From 1859 to 1861, Crawford was Postmaster and Justice of the Peace of Greenwood, California.
